GiftListr Beta – ASP.NET MVC Facebook Application

Tuesday, August 5, 2008

UPDATE:  Installation of .NET 3.5 SP 1 on my web hosting completely killed this app!  I’m currently going through the process of upgrading it but it will be down for a while.

I am officially announcing the beta release of the GiftListr for Facebook application.

GiftListr is the only truly universal gift registry allowing you to add products from ANY website without limitations.  Just browse stores the way you usually do when you shop online.  Once you find the item you want, simply copy-and-paste the url into the GiftListr application.  GiftListr will then download all the product information and product images available.  You can add notes to each item and share you gift list with friends.

The application is built entirely on ASP.NET MVC and makes extensive use of the jQuery library.  It also uses the Facebook Developer Toolkit available on CodePlex.  I would love to hear some feedback from the ASP.NET community.  Let me know what you think.  Any features you’d like to see?  Would you be willing to contribute to it if I add it to CodePlex as a community project?

Really nice work ! Did you find that using MVC made it easier to develop ?

    @OmegaSupreme:

That’s tough to say.  As a programming model it made it A LOT easier to work with, especially with the jQuery integration.  Where I hit some serious bumps was integrating the Facebook Developer Toolkit with MVC and all the Facebook security / log in plumbing.  I had to retrofit quite a bit of it to make it work, passing ControllerContexts around all over the place.

After that, the hardest part was creating that image above in Photoshop.  I learned all about blending, skewing, free transform, gradients etc.

    Dude,

You’re my hero! I was just thinking of starting a similar project to learn both MVC and the Facebook platform, and you have paved the way for me.

    Thanks!

  4. Hi Mike,

MVC framework is rock solid. It scales up to 1 million page views per day w/out problem.

This may be picking at straws but…

“GiftListr is the only truly universal gift registry allowing you to add products from ANY website without limitations.”

Your app is not working dude

Yup. I had to put this on the back burner for now. Check the update at the top of the post. I’ll probably post the source code up on codeplex and make it an open source project instead.

    Hi,

I’m building a site using asp.net mvc together with facebookconnect. I’m getting trouble with facebook logoff. I called the facebook api, but this won’t logoff. Any ideas? I appreciate any helps.
